'da Kink in My Hair
‘da Kink in My Hair by Trey Anthony is an iconic piece of Canadian theatre centred on black female voices. In the play, Novelette is a hairdresser with a special gift - she can read your secrets from your hair. Set in a vibrant Afro-Caribbean hair salon, she tends knowingly to each client. As women rush to their styling chair, each story untangles through laughter and tears. Produced at the NAC to critical acclaim, a Global television series and a hit musical, ‘da Kink in my Hair is a Canadian classic.
As a Black female producer, I'm honoured to have been the first artist to premiere this renowned work in Vancouver. I produced a sold-out staged reading series of the play at Pacific Theatre, and later remouted the work as a micro-performance in Boca del Lupo's 3.7% Envision Festival. The buzz we created around the show inspired the Arts Club, Canada's third largest theatre, to pick up the play for a full scale production in their season.

The Anitafrika Method: Masterclass
I co-produced this masterclass in The Anitafrika Method, as developed and taught by the celebrated Jamaican-Canadian artist d'bi.young anitafrika.
The Anitafrika Method is a creative approach to performance training, devising and self-development. The method is informed by decolonial queer Black feminisms, intersectionality, pan-Africanisms and Black diaspora spiritualities. It provides the artistic practitioner — particularly those who identify as Womxn and BIQTPOC (Black, Indigenous, Queer, Trans, People of Colour) — with tools to navigate the entanglement of gender, race, class, sexuality and ability in art making.
I love dreaming up events like this and making them a reality!

The Killjoy Play Series
The Killjoy Play Series is a theatre festival thats brings together three new works by female and non-binary artists. The festival was produced by interdisciplinary artists Anais West, Alexandra Lainfiesta, Kayla Deorksen and myself. It's hands down been a highlight of my career to be a creative producer for Killjoy Theatre.
Killjoy Theatre is a feminist theatre collective that develops and produces new work by female and non-binary artists. Our approach to new play development is intersectional and artist-driven. We create an anti-oppressive and inclusive space where writers have agency over their own dramaturgical process.

Breaking Borders: The Surge
Breaking Borders: The Surge was an outdoor performance I co-created and produced as part of the Vines Art Festival. The show was created by immigrant and newcomer artists to Canada and explored current issues of xenophobia, racism and immigration.
Breaking Borders: Immigrants Take The Mic!
Breaking Borders: Immigrants Take The Mic! was an event created and produced by myself and Alexandria Lainfiesta. Newcomers to Canada, working professionally as artists, stepped to the stage to showcase their talents and share stories. A night of rap, music, storytelling, and slam poetry, this event was a celebration of our fearless visa holders, immigrants, and refugee artists.
Just Above The Horizon
Just Above the Horizon was a digital performance for Black liberation. Told in an ensemble of six, this virtual production celebrated the complexities and beauty of the Black experience. From drumming, dance and spoken word to Indigenous African ceremony, I starred in and produced our performance film.
The Future Is Black
The Future is Black was an Afrofuturism film program I co-designed, facilitated and produced in collaboration with Afro Van Connect and the Vines Art Festival. The program was hosted virtually over Zoom as a creative response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This program was a Black space for new filmmakers to imagine decolonial futures.
Dope Hearts Theatre
I assembled an incredible team of local Black artists for a 48 hour play creation festival. Our friendship and art making inspired me to create a collective for Black talent called Dope Hearts Theatre.
RISE
RISE is a short film I created, wrote, and produced for Cicely Blain Consulting. The film follows daily doses of anti-Blackness to microaggressions at work that lead a young Black woman to question her worth.
C.A.R.E
"C.A.R.E: A Guide to Bystander Intervention" is a sex ed video I wrote, produced and directed on staff with Reel Youth. The film teaches young people about consent and gives audiences a tool to disrupt sexual assault. I'm really proud of this work as a film thats making positive change in people's lives. We all have to stop rape culture.
Love, Lust & Lace
Love, Lust and Lace is a Commedia dell'arte show I co-created and co-produced with a troupe of actors in collaboration with Axis Theatre. The show has been remounted three times, by popular demand, including a festival run at the Vancouver Fringe Festival. The piece is a ranchy clown show that follows Pantalone's pursuit of lust and love. In the show I played Il Dottore (the Doctor).
Us: A Black Peoples Month Festival
I was the co-curator and co-producer for this online arts festival in celebration of Black History Month. Hosted by Ensemble Theatre Comapny, I helped select the breath of Afrocentric works that played at the festival, and managed their productions. We showcased five works by Black creatives from the African Diaspora. I was also the lead curator for our online film festival as part of the celebration.
Cypher
I'm currently in post-production for my upcoming documentary, CYPHER. This short doc follows three Black youth in Vancouver as they create intentional Black spaces for community gathering and healing. This film was created in Telus Storyhive's 2020 Local Hereos Documentary Edition in collaboration with the National Screen Institue.
I was a co-producer and co-director of this project with Eva Anandi Brownstein.

Black Girls Film Camp
I produced and managed Black Women Film! Canada's annual Black Girls Film Camp in 2021. This Afrocentric youth film camp provides emerging female creatives with the opportunity to make their first films in a supportive community of Black girls, built by Black women.
For us by us.
Six new short films were created in our program which I oversaw as the Camp Manager. My tasks included production management, liaison with our stakeholders, funders and community partners, booking our post-production team, and coordinating award-winning Black filmmakers as our Guest Speakers to provide our participants with access to industry professionals.

BWF x TIFF Industry Access Program
I'm currently coordinating a cohort of 13 Afro-diasporic filmmakers with Black Women Film! Canada. These select candidates are receiving exclusive access to TIFF 2021 as emerging creatives.
A world class film festival, our lucky 13 will network with other Black female filmmakers across Canada, meet with industry experts, and enjoy a curated experience of the festival as Black women in film and TV.
I am overjoyed to be an artist in this program and to be spearheading the admin and execution of this initiative as the cohort's facilitator.
